Circuit City Gives The Axe To “High Paid” Employees

Hot on the heels of the announcement that CompUSA and Tweeter are closing 126 and 53 stores respectively is word that Circuit City is firing 3,400 employees and bringing in lower-cost workers to fill their roles. The company says that the move is aimed to help realign its cost and expense structure.”

Circuit City closing up shop…69 shops to be exact

“Circuit City Stores Inc., the nation’s No. 2 consumer electronics retailer, said Thursday it plans to close seven domestic Superstores, a Kentucky distribution center and 62 company-owned stores in Canada to cut costs and improve its financial performance.

The closings will take place over the next six months at an expected total cost of $85 million to $105 million, all to be incurred in the current fourth fiscal quarter, which ends Feb. 28, Circuit City said.”

They don’t mention the locations yet because the employees don’t know yet, but like ’em or not, it’s about 100x easier to get checked out there than at Best Buy.  I swear, it must be a rule that a checkout line has to be at more than 20 people before Best Buy will open another one.
