How To Remove GRUB/LILO after dual booting Windows and Linux

March 2, 2007

In my case, I was triple booting Windows XP, Vista, and Linux.  This should work even if you are only dual booting XP or Vista with Linux though.

To remove GRUB/LILO from an XP & Linux dual boot situation:

  • Boot to XP CD
  • Start Recovery Console
  • Run FixMBR
  • Reboot

To remove GRUB/LILO from a Vista & Linux dual boot or XP, Vista, & Linux situation

  • Boot to XP CD
  • Start Recovery Console
  • Run FixMBR
  • Reboot
  • Boot to Vista CD
  • Start Command Prompt
  • Switch to CD drive letter (Mine was F: but the prompt started in X:)
  • CD \boot (switch to boot folder)
  • bootsect /nt60 SYS (install Vista compatible boot loader)

Vista’s boot loader won’t overwrite GRUB (I didn’t try it against LILO, but I suspect it won’t overwrite it either), but it will overwrite XP’s.  XP’s FixMBR however, will overwrite GRUB & LILO, so the fix is to overwrite the Linux bootloader with XP’s FixMBR, then to overwrite that with Vista’s if you are trying to get Vista’s bootloader back up and running.
