TiVo Users Can Get Amazon Movies From TV

July 10, 2007

“Users of TiVo Inc.’s digital video recorders will be able to order movies from Inc. directly from their TVs starting Tuesday.

The two companies partnered in March to deliver Amazon’s Unbox download service to TiVo machines, but the feature required customers to place their orders on a computer through Amazon’s Web site.

Now, PC intervention won’t be needed. The new ”Buy on TV” feature allows TiVo users to search Amazon’s video catalog and rent or purchase titles using their TiVo’s remote control.

The feature works for owners of TiVo Series2 and Series3 broadband-connected DVRs.

The new feature is the latest example of how companies — including Microsoft Corp., Wal-Mart Stores Inc. and Apple Inc. — are trying to find ways to deliver online videos to customers’ living rooms.”

Tivo To Return To DirecTV?

June 6, 2007

“With DirecTV under new management, it could very well happen. The two companies parted ways after the satellite provider’s former owner, News Corp., decided to back technology from its NDS subsidiary. Now with Liberty Media about to take the reins, the situation could change. TiVo CEO Tom Rogers said at a Deustche Bank conference that it could open the door again for the DVR maker to market directly to the company’s customers.DirecTV’s new owners reportedly have TiVo fans among their ranks. The DVR company could use the boost as well; its best period of customer growth was during the partnership with the satellite provider.”

TiVo Prepping A “Mass Appeal” HD DVR Priced Below Series 3

May 31, 2007

“Everyone knows that true DVR nirvana requires support for sweet, sweet HD video. Yet while the cost of HDTVs has dropped sharply in the last 5 years, the cost of getting an HD TiVo up and running has not. The much-anticipated Series 3 debuted at $799, and the previous DirecTiVo HR 10-250 debuted at over $1,000. This situation is particularly bad for TiVo, as several cable and satellite operators now offer their own HD DVRs—often for as little as $10 per month. Many consumers aren’t interested in paying the major price premium that TiVo requires, even if they believe that TiVo provides both a superior product and experience (a belief I completely agree with).”

Is Tivo Tightening The Noose On Your Data?

May 11, 2007

According to CrunchGear;  “TiVo has developed technology to create a link between a host and a local hard drive using an encryption key to lock down any access by you, the user, unless the code can be correctly identified. This concept builds upon the commonly used technique of a Universally Unique Identifiers (UUIDs) that are created with so many possible combinations “that 1 trillion UUIDs have to be created every nanosecond for 10 billion years to exhaust the number of UUIDs.”

While UUIDs are a general technique, TiVo describes using the SHA-1 algorithm described in the Secure Hash Standard, Federal Information Processing Standard 180-1, National Institute of Standards and Technology (Apr. 17, 1995), that is, if you’re interested in light reading. In short, guessing the key is no easy task.”
